Committee Chair Descriptions

Fund Development Chair

The Fund Development Chair recruits committee members and manages the committee, reports monthly to the Executive Council, and interfaces with other committees as required. She will also perform the same tasks as the Fund Development committee members as appropriate.

Scholarship Committee Chair (Open)

This position helps the VP of Career Guidance run the scholarship program. Every year, SWE SCV awards high school and college scholarships to female students who are studying a STEM discipline. This position involves updating the scholarship application, communicating to high school, colleges, and universities, advertising the scholarship program, helping to run judging committee meetings, and helping organize the scholarship annual banquet in May. Member Program Committee Chair (Open)

The purpose of the Programs committee is to offer section members exposure to topics and activities that will provide opportunities for personal improvement. The organized events also give the membership an opportunity to network with one another and to build relationships and support among the membership. Typical activities include speakers on technical, interpersonal, health, current issues, financial, and legal subjects; technical, historical or community tours; joint meetings with engineering societies, student groups, and professional women’s organizations; seminars or workshops on technical or self-improvement topics or family issues. This committee reports to the Vice President -Member Services.

Communications Chair

This chair is responsible for communicating important information to our members. This includes creating the monthly email newsletter, as well as managing our Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages. You will work with the Executive Council and Chairs to see what information needs to be communicated, and ensure our members are feeling engaged between events.

Webmaster (Open)

The webmaster is in charge of the SWE-SCV website. The chair is responsible for updating the website content, working with the Executive Council to get the latest information, as well as maintaining the design and structure. They are also responsible for keeping our online calendar up to date.

Nominating Committee Chair (Open)

The purpose of the nominating committee is to perform all functions related to the election of officers for the Santa Clara Valley Section. This committee reports to the President.

Committee Chair Responsibilities:
  • Oversee and delegate committee tasks
  • Call meetings as required
  • Serve as liaison to Executive Council, Newsletter Editor, and Section
  • Ensure timely mailing of ballots to Section members. Designate Tellers Committee to count ballots.

Tellers Committee (Open)

The purpose of the Tellers Committee is to collect and tally the SWE-SCV election ballots and to report the voting results. This committee reports to the President.
Committee Member Responsibilities:
  • Have SWE-SCV members send completed ballots to Tellers Committee Chair’s address
  • Collect and tally valid ballots
  • Report voting results to Executive Council


Outreach Positions

Would you like to make a difference in the lives of young girls and to help the community? SWE-SCV has been conducting outreach programs for over 20 years and has been recognized both in regional and national awards for its outreach within Region A and Silicon Valley. Continuing this legacy is an important task, but there is also great opportunity to lead and innovate so that these programs continue to grow and flourish!

Designing Women Committee Chair (Open)

SWE-SCV is currently seeking a chair for our Designing Women Program. Designing Women is a signature SWE-SCV program that is geared towards middle school girls within the Bay Area. This is half day program that is typically held at a company or university. The day consists of a variety of activities from company fairs featuring demonstrations and information, workshops, games, college panels, and professional round tables. 

Requirements:  We are actively seeking a volunteer for this position who can commit 3-5 hours a week during the Fall to lead the effort of planning and organizing this event with the support of SWE-SCV. This chair will also be required to maintain an active SWE membership, complete outreach training, report to the VP of Community Outreach when necessary and participate in bimonthly meetings with SWE-SCV outreach. WOW! That’s Engineering! Committee Chair (Open)

WOW! That’s Engineer! Is a nationally branded SWE National Program which SWE-SCV began hosting within Silicon Valley at various college and company campuses. WOW! is a half-day program what gives high school girls (grades 9-12) the opportunity to tour the college/company campus to learn the about engineer, participate in round table discussions with professional women engineers, and gain advice from panel of university students. Women engineers and university student present interactive workshops with unique engineering topics to inspire creativity and educate on challenges in design, construction, and execution.

WOW! That’s Engineering! also includes a parent track that allows parents to hear from women engineers, university professors, and teachers on helping their daughter succeed at a university setting. The track includes university information, a parent panel, and other workshops aimed at educating parents on the challenges and ways of aiding their daughter in math and science.

Tinker Time Chair (Open)

Tinker Time is a brand new SWE-SCV program that is being targeted towards 4th and 5th grade elementary school students. A proof of concept is currently being developed for this program.

Requirements:  We are actively seeking a volunteer for this position who can commit 3-5 hours a week during the Fall to lead the effort of planning and organizing this event with the support of SWE-SCV. This chair will also be required to maintain an active SWE membership, complete outreach training, report to the VP of Community Outreach when necessary and participate in bimonthly meetings with SWE-SCV outreach. Marketing Outreach Chair (Open)

We are actively seeking a volunteer for this position who can 2-4 hours a week during the Fall to lead the effort of growing our outreach to K-12 schools for current programs and scholarships and maintaining all contacts with K-12 schools. This position will also be responsible for mailing monthly outreach volunteer opportunities within SWE-SCV. This chair will also be required to maintain an active SWE membership, complete outreach training, report to the VP of Community Outreach when necessary and participate in bimonthly meetings with SWE-SCV outreach. Science Fairs Committee Chair (Open)

The purpose of the Science Fairs Committee Chair is to serve as a primary point of contact for local science fair organizers. The committee chair is responsible for recruiting judges, attending and judging at local science fairs as required and reports to the Vice President -Community Outreach. 


GetSET Positions

The following positions are associated with our GetSET program, targeted at high school girls from under-represented backgrounds.

GetSET Fund Development Coordinator

Manages funds, sponsorships, and donations for the GetSET program.

GetSET Volunteer Coordinator

Coordinate and schedule workshop requirements with science, and technology workshop leaders and volunteers. Also coordinate volunteers for college field trips and company tours. She will also coordinate and distribute workshop materials with workshop leaders.

GetSET Logistics Coordinator

Coordinate and schedule event with hosting university, including procuring room and board for all attendees and counsellors, reserving locations for special events during summer week, and notification of workshop schedule/requirements. Coordinate with Director of Volunteers to ensure workshop needs are understood and met.
